Be part of the Y7 2021 Taskforce

ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUTH VOICE AND ENGAGING YOUNG PEOPLE?

DO YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WORKING AS PART OF A TEAM TO DELIVER PROJECTS AND EVENTS TO AN EXCELLENT STANDARD?

Then we want you to apply to be part of the Implementation Taskforce, the team in charge of making the UK Y7 2021 happen.

Closing date: 27th November 2020 23:59

Duration of role: 1 year

Background

The Y7 is the official youth engagement group for the G7 Heads of State Summit. Its purpose is to bring the youth voice to influence the highest level of international decision making.

To achieve this, each year, youth representation organisations in each G7 member state select young leaders (known as delegates) to represent their country at the Y7. The Future Leaders Network is responsible for the selection and support of the U.K.’s Y7 delegates.

These delegates are responsible for consulting with youth in their own country, and formulating youth policy recommendations that young people in their country would like to see taken forward. The delegations then meet their international counterparts for a series of negotiations, which culminate with the Y7 Summit. At the Summit, the G7 Youth finalise a list of youth policy recommendations (presented in the form of a ‘communique’) they wish G7 Heads of State to take forward. These recommendations are then presented to the Heads of State for consideration in their final Declaration.

In 2021, the U.K. hosts the G7 Presidency. As a result, the Future Leaders Network has been asked to deliver the Y7.

Vision

Our ambition is for the Y7 2021 to be an exemplar in youth participation in decision making. To achieve that ambition, we are working hard to deliver a Summit, and pre- and post-Summit activities, which are inclusive, impactful, developmental and adaptive. We’re looking for a diverse, representative and passionate group of young people who will help us deliver the Y7 2021.

Mission

Over the summer, we recruited a diverse group of young people to form the Y7 2021 Design Working Group. This Group made recommendations as to the outcomes the Summit should seek to achieve, outreach models, and a suggested design for the Summit.

We are now recruiting an Implementation Taskforce who will bring this vision to life.

The Taskforce will be led by two Co-Chairs and will consist of three subgroups:

Programme and Delegates

You’ll be responsible for:

●        Liaising with Y7 delegates, acting as a point of contact for international young leaders in the run up, delivery and legacy of the Summit

●        Preparing Y7 delegates, ensuring that we offer a world-class training programme to young people, equipping them with the skills they need to be successful

●        Liaising with young U.K. leaders who will participate in the Summit as ‘Youth Forum’ members, acting as a point of contact for domestic young leaders in the run up, delivery and legacy of the Summit

●        Preparing Youth Forum members, ensuring that we offer a world-class training programme, equipping them with the skills they need to be successful

●        Working closely with the Logistics sub-group to create a plan for pre-Summit and Summit activities

●        Identifying and securing high profile speakers to attend the Summit

Comms, Media and Outreach

You’ll be responsible for:

●        Building relationships with the press and media to ensure maximum coverage of the Y7 Summit 2021

●        Drafting press releases, communications campaigns, social media posts, to raise awareness and engagement in the Y7 Summit

●        Working with the Wider Sector Network (a coalition of youth leadership organisations in the U.K.) to share information, campaigns and engagement opportunities with a wide audience

●        Working collaboratively with delegates to deliver national youth engagement and consultation activity.

Logistics

You’ll be responsible for:

●        Researching and securing venues, accommodation and travel for all delegates and Youth Forum members (for all/any in-person activity)

●        Working to ensure all venues, accommodation and delivery platforms are accessible to all, and ensuring that all reasonable adjustments are accommodated for (for all/any in-person activity)

●        Working closely with the Programme and Delegates Sub-Group to create a plan for pre-Summit and Summit activities

●        Ensuring all VIP speakers have all they need to attend and deliver sessions safely and securely

●        Identifying and managing a suitable tech platform to enable digital pre-negotiations and if necessary, summit negotiations

●        Identifying and managing a suitable tech platform for national youth engagement and consultation activity

●        Carrying out evaluation activity to ensure the Implementation Taskforce gather sufficient evidence to assess the success of the Summit

Ways of Working

As you can imagine, given the current Covid-19 situation, the Taskforce’s operating methods will be determined by Government guidance. At present, we foresee the bulk of preparatory activity taking place virtually.

We ask for all Taskforce members to be able to commit to at least 5 hours of activity each week – given the exciting scale of the Summit next year, we really do ask that you only apply if you are able to offer full commitment to the opportunity.

All Taskforce members must be able to attend the full duration of the Summit, to take place in May/June 2021 (partial attendance will not be accepted).

The role is voluntary, but any expenses/costs associated with all/any travel (for example, in the situation that the Summit takes place in person) will be covered, within reason.

Essential Criteria

All applicants must demonstrate evidence of:

●        Passion for youth empowerment, participation and engagement - either through professional, voluntary or community work, you must be excited about giving young people a voice

●        Outstanding project management skills - able to balance competing priorities, work at pace, and deliver successful outcomes.

●        Excellent interpersonal skills - able to work effectively with a group of diverse young people, create an inclusive working environment, and bring out the best in others

●        Strong communication skills - able to tailor communication to suit the audience, and deliver impactful, compelling messages

You’ll also need to demonstrate clear evidence of interest, experience or skills in the Sub-Group you have selected.
